The Proski Newcastle North Stars became the first team to qualify for the 2012 AIHL Finals Series following back to back victories at home on the weekend.
The North Stars move to 42 points and sit atop the Bauer Conference and the League with 14 wins from 18 games. The Melbourne Ice remain on top of the Easton conference but stay on 40 points after a shock loss to the Perth Thunder on the weekend.
Both games were broadcast live to the internet in a move that is already proving popular with hockey fans around the globe. You can now watch all of our home game FREE at the new home of North Stars TV : http://www.livestream.com/newcastlenorthstars .
Saturday night saw the North Stars defeat Adelaide Adrenaline 5-2 in a fairly feisty encounter at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.
Conversely on Sunday night the North Stars had little trouble with the Canberra Knights, defeating them 9-1. Josh Broekman played a full game in net and was outstanding in keeping out the Knights attack. His chance at a shut-out was alive until midway through the third period when the Knights finally got on the scoreboard.
The wins mean that the North Stars will contest the finals series which is this year being held at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.
Ticketing information for the AIHL finals series can be found at the AIHL website here.
The North Stars next home game is this Saturday at 5:00pm versus the Sydney Ice Dogs.
